Social bookmarking has been around for years going all the way back to the original tag and ping revolution. It is still a powerful way of creating vast amounts of backlinks to your website, blog or salesletter but things have changed a lot over the past year or so. This has been due to mant factors, the biggest of which is that the big bookmarking sites like deliscious have added "nofollow" to their sites.

What this basically means is that as far as google is concerned links coming from these sites will add no authority or "link juice" to your site. Yes people will still be able to follow the link to your site but for the most part social bookmarking traffic is pretty useless and has the lowest conversion rate of any other traffic.

Another factor is the competition. Every marketer and his dog are blasting all these sites which means getting on a page with any link power is virtually impossible and even if you do manage it it will be for a few seconds and if the bots don’t happen to be crawling the site during those few seconds then when it does find your link its going to be on a page with no importance. Do not forget this is only for the sites that even allow "follow" links.

Next the big sites are so power mad they take great pleasure in banning any account that looks like it might belong to a marketer. You might spend months getting all the links on a site and then wallop one person clicks on a complaint or report link and your accout is gone

So how can you get around this? My favorite ploy is using "average Joe" created sites. In other words bookmarking sites created by normal people and not by mega giants or corporations. The best type of sites to look for are pligg sites. Pligg is a free software that enables you to create your own social bookmarking or networking site. The beauty of these sites is that they get a lot of love from google and they are low competition. They are a clone of Digg the major difference being it only takes a few votes to get you on the coveted home page. Sometimes just creating 2 or 3 accounts and voting for your own bookmarks can achieve this. Remember to use proxies as pligg records the ip of sign ups.

I have seen better results in the search engines from bookmarks on a PR0 pligg site than i have from deliscious and other huge bookmarking sites. So how do you find these sites? Just look in google. A good way to get started is add the following to the google search box "Your Source for Social News and Networking"
