Today I am going to be talking about rss feeds and their importance for promoting your sites, blogs and businesses. I am going to assume that you know what rss feeds are but if not you can read more about them by clicking the following link.

RSS Feeds

To be completely honest there are quite a number of reasons you should be using rss feeds in your online businesses but for today I am going to concentrate on just one. First a little bit of background. Google implemented a tag a few years ago called ‘nofollow’. Now basically what nofollow does is remove any ‘link love’ or whatever you want to call it from following the link.

So if you had a hyperlink going from site A to site B then although people could follow this link by clicking on it, Site A will not be passing any of its authority to Site B. You can see an example of this if you were to check out the source or html for this post as I have put a nofollow tag on the link above to Wikipedia. They certainly have enough authority or PR and do not need any of mine!

So what has the nofollow tag got to do with rss feeds? Plenty! Many of the social bookmarking and other web 2.0 sites have now started adding nofollow tags to all their links. So all your careful planning and promoting through these sites has now been reduced dramatically. I think you will see over the coming months a whole lot more sites following suit. The main reason is because these sites have so many outbound links they are literally giving away all their authority. This is the main reason many of the big social bookmarking sites have taken a "PR" hammering lately.

One of the first sites to implement this was delicious. Now deliscious is one of the big boys when it comes to social bookmarking so the impact of this was pretty major. If you open your ‘home’ page on deliscious and check the source code you will see that all the links to the sites you have bookmarked have a nofollow tag like the one below.

So where do rss feeds fir in to this question. Simple. Rss feeds do not contain the nofollow tag! So basically if you want to utilize the full power of your promotions via social bookmarking and other web2.0 sites then start promoting and using your rss feeds to full effect.

It is not only deliscious and bookmarking sites. Even the Web 2.0 monster that is hub pages are doing it too. If you don’t have enough hubs to pass their threshold and even then if you hub does not have a high enough hub score then your hub will contain the dreaded nofollow tag. BUT the rss feeds do not! Go check it out and see for yourself.

I will be going into more details about how to use your rss feeds to maximize their power in upcoming posts and videos so stay tuned and be prepared to change the way you promote your sites.
